New Positions within the EWB-UNM Group
  • Health and Safety Committee Lead - (Filled)
    • For every trip we do it is required that we form a Health and Safety Plan (HASP).  This position will be responsible for developing this plan as well as preparing the group for travel.
  • Recruitment and Membership Committee Lead - (Filled)
    • We are always in need of new members!  This position will assist in building the membership of EWB-UNM.

Combined Project Meetings | 09/20/12 | 6:00-7:00PM

A meeting held by the project leads, Dave Forster, Henry Escalante, and Kody Garcia to form teams for both the Bolivia project as well as the Ramah project.

Bolivia Project
It will be a busy upcoming year for this project, with report writing and an implementation trip in the summer of 2013.

Ramah Project
The Ramah project has much work to be done still in monitoring the past implemented project. In addition, there is the possibility of several new projects to be done in Ramah, New Mexico.

  • Calculate chlorine dose/contact time for open pit wells and hand pump wells - Josh
  • Verify standards for  E. Coli, Arsenic, and Manganese included -Curtis

Filter workshop

  • Trash bins might not be ok because it's not food grade plastic
  • We should test the water to see if trash bins are affecting the water
  • Maybe we can do that testing here
  • 1st week of prep work - telling people; checking on availability of rooms; finding the equipment; purchase concrete; making a form for the pour

  • Ryan can't do it April 20th and 22nd
  • Kacey can't do the first 2 weekends in April
  • Tentative only do the plastic filters on March 31st and April 1st and do the concrete later

Our meeting today centered around a talk named "What they don't teach you in engineering school." 


We went over and talked about the may facets of engineering which aren't covered in our classes.

  • Ability to create design reports
  • Putting plan sets out to bid
  • What do consulting engineers do
  • How does an "owner" contract work with an engineer
  • The ways an owner can contract the overall project, essentially the workflow 
  • Standards are available for a resource - EJCDC, APWA, Army Corps of Engineers Manuals, State/City, ASTM, ASME, etc..
  • Cost Estimating - everyone wants to know how much it is going to cost before anything gets done
  • Responsibilities during construction 
  • Engineers don't do inspections we do observations
  • Organization of all sources of information into a single coherent manual for the customer is your responsibility 
  • Communication with non-technical people i.e. clients. It's a skill. There is no class in it
  • Writing is an important skill
  • Ask lots of questions
